Meeting of Abraham with Melchizedek
Meeting of Abraham with Melchizedek
Melchizedek (Hebrew: מַלְכִּי-צֶדֶק, Malkitsе́dek; king of justice, from malki ‒ «my king», tsedek – “justice”), a character in the Bible, czar of Salim, the high priest in Jerusalem in the time of Patriarch Abraham.
After Abraham’s return from the battle with the four eastern kings, with captured people and property, the prophet Melchizedek went out to meet Abraham with bread and wine, blessed him and received from him a tenth of all the good taken from the enemy. His residence was the city of Jerusalem. The priesthood of the prophet Melchizedek was recognized not only by Abraham, but also by those persons from whose property he was given tithes.
A similar plot is presented in the iconostasis from the chapel of St. Sophia Cathedral, It is also displayed at this exhibition.
