The exhibition “Beauty from the Tower” opened at the St. Sophia Museum.

A unique exhibition “Beauty from the Tower” dedicated to the holy great martyr Barbara has opened in the St. Sophia Museum of the National Conservation Area “St. Sophia of Kyiv”.

We all know the name Barbara from childhood (Barbara, Barbie and dozens of other derivatives). It is most often associated with the fairy-tale image of the beauty from the tower – an incredibly beautiful girl who was hidden from prying eyes. Currently, St. Barbara appears to visitors in eleven images from different regions of Ukraine (icons of the 18th – 19th centuries). The icon painters were inspired by her beauty, which they each saw in their own way…

St. Barbara also inspired the Brothers Grimm to write the world-famous fairy tale Rapunzel. 210 years have passed since then, and more than 100 years ago a book appeared in which our great-grandparents read the stories of Rapunzel, Tom Thumb, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Town Musicians from Bremen in Ukrainian for the first time… This book is also presented in the exhibition.

At the opening of the exhibition, the first visitors were interviewed by Associate Professor of History, Faculty of Sociology and Law, National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute named after Ihor Sikorskyi”, Doctor of Historical Sciences Antonina Kizlova and Deputy Director of the Museum “Spiritual Treasures of Ukraine” (Kyiv), Candidate of Historical Sciences Vitalii Tkachuk.

The exhibition will last until February 28, 2022.
