South Tower

South Tower

Adjacent to the southern wing of the Consistory is the stone South Tower – another entrance to the monastery courtyard, built during the time of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. It is a square two-storey building in plan, topped by a massive hemispherical bath with a cone-shaped spire. On the spire, as before, in October 2010, a metal weather vane in the form of a gilded figure of Archangel Michael was installed. The ground floor of the building has a vaulted passage. There is a spacious room above it. Today it is one of the repositories of the Conservation Area. In the thickness of the eastern wall there is a vaulted room for a guard. To the east of the tower adjoins the oldest section of a powerful brick wall erected at the same time, which connects it with the Bell Tower. The wall around the estate of the Sophia Monastery was built during the first half of the 18th century.
