Exhibition «Bread on the table. Holidays and everyday life»
Exhibition «Bread on the table. Holidays and everyday life»
New exhibition «Bread on the table. Holidays and everyday life» takes place in the halls of the Bakery (monastic building of the 18th). The aim of the exhibition is to show several aspects of subsistence of bread in the spiritual and material culture of Ukrainians: economic, industrial, religious, symbolic and ceremonial.
Objects from the funds of the National Historical and Ethnographic Reserve “Pereyaslav” and the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine “Pyrohiv” show how the utensils for cooking and keeping bread looked like in the peasant and monastery farms.
Porcelain and earthenware from the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art as well as from the private collection of Olena Korus demonstrate the standards of the noble and city culture of serving the table with bread and cookies.
Western European engravings from the collection of the National Art Museum named after Bogdan and Varvara Khanenko provide with information about bread as one of the most important metaphors of Christian spiritual culture.
Although the Soviet state proclaimed atheism, a kind of materialistic cult was created around the bread, as evidenced by propaganda posters from the collection of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine.
The exhibition will run until March 4, 2020.
