An exhibition of works by the famous Ukrainian artist Heorhiy Yakutovych has opened at the Zaborovsky Gate

An exhibition of works by the prominent Ukrainian artist Heorhiy Yakutovych from the Reserve’s collection has opened in the exhibition halls of the Zaborovsky Gate monument.

The exhibition presents two cycles of illustrations, thematically related to the history, culture and life of Ancient Rus’-Ukraine. These are illustrations to a dramatic poem “Yaroslav the Wise” by Ivan Kocherga, performed in 1963, and to a novel “Zahar Berkut” by Ivan Franko, created in the early 1970s.

Critics and artists praised the linocuts for “Yaroslav the Wise” for their convincing historicism, monumentality, ingenuity of operation of stroke and tone. In 1964, when the 400th anniversary of the “Apostle” by Ivan Fedorov was celebrated, G. Yakutovych’s works were awarded a special diploma named after Ivan Fedorov.

Illustrations for “Zakhar Berkut” are made in the etching technique, which is characterized by picturesqueness and richness of texture.

It should be noted that Yakutovich’s idea to illustrate “Zakhar Berkut” came when he was the main artist of the film of the same name, which was released in 1971.

The exhibition will run until August 30, 2020.
