Nikitenko N.M. (2015) Baroko Sofii Kyivskoi [The baroque of Sophia of Kyiv]. Kyiv: LYBID.

Sophia of Kyiv has been at the epicenter of national history for more than a millennium. Sophia is traditionally considered an ancient Rus monument, but it is also a unique historical source of the Baroque period. The author reveals to the reader Sophia of Kyiv in an unusual perspective – as a grand monument of this era, associated with the fateful for the people of Ukraine periods of the Mohyla revival and development of the nation-state – the Hetmanate. The book is well illustrated: there are views of the architectural complex of Sophia, samples of its monumental and easel paintings, rarities of the cathedral… For the general public.

Marholina I. (2015) Kyrylivska tserkva na Dorohozhychakh [St. Curil’s Church on Dorohozhychi]. Kyiv: HOROBETS.

St. Cyril’s Church is a world-class architectural and artistic pearl. The history, architecture, monumental painting of the monument reflect the stages of development of Rus-Ukraine of 12th-19thcenturies. Among the unique fresco compositions of the twelfth century there are those that have no analogues among the monuments of the entire Byzantine-Balkan circle. On the wall of the church there is a portrait of a mysterious old man – the abbot of the Cyril’s Monastery. Most of the frescoes are made up of monumental works by Ukrainian artists of the 19th century, among which the works of the famous M. Vrubel are “heard” with a bright picturesque chord. Cyril’s Sacrum keeps many secrets, which the author of the book tries to reveal and invites to look at the temple and related events with indifferent eyes. For the general public.

The third part highlights the results of a comprehensive morphological study of the skeleton, which is currently in the sarcophagus. The appendices publish documentary materials concerning the history of the discovery of the sarcophagus in 1936, 1939, 1964 and 2009, the study of the remains in 1940 and 2009-2011, the search for the missing remains of Yaroslav in 2009-2010.

Marholina Iryna (2019) Fresky Kyrylivskoi tserkvy v Kyievi: monografiia [Frescoes of St. Cyril’s Church in Kyiv: monography]. Kyiv: HOROBETS.

The mysterious St. Cyril’s Church on Dorogozhychi hills of Kyiv opens the pages of its cryptic history.

To date, a number of scientific and popular science publications by Iryna Marholina have been published on the history of the foundation, the discovery of the name of the customer and the founder of the building, and its dating; on the definition and honoring of prominent abbots and founders of the Cyril’s Monastery; description of the architecture of the monument; Cyril’s necropolis, etc. Attention is also paid to the monumental paintings of the 12th, 17th and 19th centuries, which adorn the walls of the church, as well as separately – the works of M. Vrubel.

This monograph is devoted to the study of the original painting of this Christian building – a painting that has not yet been fully explored. The fresco ensemble is 800 square meters of the twelfth century painting, which has plots that have no analogies among the sacred monuments of the entire Byzantine-Balkan circle. The book attributes unknown compositions and single images, reveals the content of mysterious plots, identifies images of saints and more.

The author reveals the beauty and grandeur of the fresco ensemble, which has survived to this day from the gray antiquity of Rus-Ukraine.

The book is intended for historians, architects, art critics, culturologists, archaeologists, philologists and anyone interested in world history and in particular the culture of Ukraine.
