The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on the Water (2003-2004)

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on the Water (2003-2004)

The first and the only temple in Ukraine and Europe of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker  located directly in aquatorium of the Dnieper, that’s why it was named as a «temple on the water”.

It is known that in 1900 the Kyiv Society for Rescue on the Waters built in this place near the river pier a wooden chapel in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, where funeral services for drowners were provided. This temple was destroyed in the 1930s.

At the beginning of the 21 century it was decided to restore the temple. The company “Ukrrichflot” made an order and sponsored the reconstruction of the church that was erected in 2003-2004 under the project of architect Losytsky. The proportions of the former ruined chapel were taken as the basis and the motives of the Ukrainian Baroque temples with internal pillars were also used in the church’s architecture. The temple is located directly in aquatorium of the Dnieper on a high concrete stylobate, covered with granite slabs. At the base of the stylobate, 12 fourteen meters long dowel piles were drilled, they are symbolizing 12 apostles. The construction of the church is connected with the embankment by a pedestrian bridge. The church built on the water area is an example of successfully solved architectural forms and the latest engineering technologies.
