The Church of St. Nicholas on the Embankment (Naberezhna-Mykilska Church) (18th century)
The Church of St. Nicholas on the Embankment (Naberezhna-Mykilska Church) (18th century)
The architectural monument of the Baroque, built in 1772-1775. It is located at the corner of the streets of H. Skovoroda and Pochainynska.
The origin of the name of the church is due to its location on the banks of the Dnieper. According to folk believe, the first temple in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was erected in the 11th century near that place where the parents had lost their baby during pilgrimage to Vyshgorod, where they floated by boat on the Dnieper to worship the relics of Sts. Borys and Gleb. During the trip, the woman was asleep and dropped the baby into the water. From despair the parents appealed to St. Nicholas with prayer for help. Soon a miracle came true – the parents found their child alive and intact at St. Sophia Cathedral near the icon of St. Mykola Mokryi. It was revered as the most ancient miraculous icon of Kyiv Rus.
The first written record about Naberezhna-Mykilska church (the Church of St. Nicolas on the Embankment) dates back to 1543. It burned down in 1677 and in its place erected a new wooden one. In front of it, during the years 1772-1775, a new stone church was constructed in the Baroque style under the project of I. Hrygorovych-Barskyi. During the great fire of 1811, only the walls remained from the church. Only the temple icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was saved (painted by tempera and dated back to the first half of the 17th century), which is preserved in the church to this day. After some time the temple was restored. In the second half of the 19th century the church ensemble complemented the steepled belfry with a winter church in the style of Classicism.
